Heteroglossia

As a glossary of terms, the bookwork ’Heteroglossia’ pays attention to the particularities of lithographic materials. In this, my intention is to reveal something of what lies beneath its printed pages, and to bear witness to the embedded presence of lives shaped by the practices of stone lithography. Discretely inflecting the volume’s aesthetic qualities and content, are the 19th century publications of surgeon-anatomists Robert Carswell and Joseph Maclise. More explicitly featured (in homage to the lyrical birth of stone lithography and the heterogeneity of its incarnate languages) are quotations from technical handbooks and a polyphony of other voices from diverse fields of knowledge.

Volume of nine individually coloured stone lithographs with hand-offset printed text on Simili Japon 225g paper. Case bound with hand washed book cloth and letterpress cover. Drawn, printed, bound, and published by the artist in an edition of 7 individually coloured copies. Dimensions 57x47cms.
