Serena Smith

Serena Smith works with drawing, printmaking, and writing to explore the perpetual interplay between lived experience, and reflective observation. Outcomes from these processes, shaped by systematic constraints and serendipity, knowingly play with a lyrical ambiguity that spills out from the structures of communication. A concern with language, acts of inscription, and technology, that emanates from her lithography practice, is the focus for ongoing doctoral research. Born in London in 1960, the formative years of her practice were spent at the Curwen Studio, where she trained as a lithographer. Serena’s subsequent and ongoing work as technical consultant, educator, mentor, and artist, continues to be enriched by collaboration with fellow artists. Regularly exhibited both in the UK and internationally, her stone lithographs are held in a number of collections including the British Museum, Nottingham University, and China Printmaking Museum.
