Serena Smith

  about

  contact

Serena Smith works with drawing, stone lithography and language, to create artefacts that play with a lyrical ambiguity that spills out from systems of communication. Through these practices of inscription, and the poetic registers of image and text, she considers the paradoxes of lived experience.
Born in London in 1960, she first trained as an fine art printer at Curwen Studio (1985-97) and is now an internationally recognised lithographer with work held in public collections in the UK and overseas. Smith's research interests carry the legacy of these formative years, drawing on the material worlds of the workshop, genealogies and histories that underlie the knowledge of an artisan lithographer, and a wide transdisciplinary field. Her doctoral thesis explored the heterogeneous modes of language engendered by the practices of stone lithography, and her written works span the domains of printmaking discourse, the social sciences and humanities, and creative writing in the visual arts.
